Health care focused high school opens its doors

booksOn September 1, 2010 the Instituto Health Sciences Career Academy in welcomes its first class of about 160 freshmen.  The Instituto is a charter school aimed at getting students ready to enter the medical field.  Currently the Chicago area has openings for over 3, 000 registered nurses and the hope is that a school such as this will serve as a potential employment pool.

There are many other openings in the field as well such as physical therapists and pharmacists.  This is an attempt to revitalize less privileged neighborhoods.  It is part of Chicago’s Renaissance 2010 which will open 100 schools of this sort.

Charter schools in Texas showing good academic results

There are many groups funding charter schools across the country, the latest in the news is the YES group after a $1 million donation from Oprah.  Another big name is KIPP and now Harmony.  Harmony is different for a few reasons.  First it came about in a quieter fashion, but, secondly, it is starting to make news now due to allegations it is tied to Fethullah Gülen, a Turkish Muslim.  The school system denies the connection.  I’m not going to get into whether or not I think it is tied to the Islamic religion or if I think they “push” Islam through the curriculum.  I, instead, am going to discuss what I found out about the academic success of Harmony.
