Who Is Behind The Lower Teen Birthrate? MTV…Are You Kidding Me?
Honestly, is this a sign that the world is coming to an end? The network that has given us Beavis and Butt-Head, Punk’d, Road Rules and Jackass has played an important role in the recent drop in teen pregnancy. How is that possible?
A new government study, according to the Christian Science Monitor, shows the US teen birthrate falling dramatically in 2009 after a five percent increase from 2005 to 2007. Experts say that this drop is partially due in part to MTV‘s “16 and Pregnant” documentary series, which many teens credit with opening their eyes to the consequences of unprotected sex and early parenthood.
These College Degrees Can Help You Get Hired In A Bad Job Market
I don’t know if there are very many things more nerve-racking, to a parent, than the thought that after 4 years of college their kid won’t be able to find a job. All of the money and time invested just to find out that there isn’t a lot of demand for a degree in Latin with a minor in art history.
But, don’t give up hope because the National Employment Law Project, an organization focused on worker’s issues and economic development, recently looked at occupations that added jobs between December 2009 and July 2010.
St Louis Cardinal Great, Lou Brock, Is Going To Bat For Kids
In Cardinal Nation, Lou Brock is held in the highest esteem. The Baseball Hall of Fame member spent 18 seasons playing baseball for the St Louis Cardinals…stealing bases and the hearts of Cardinal fans.
Cyber Dangers
Brock recently visited Centralia High School and spoke with parents and students about cyber bullying and the ChildSafe Online Dashboard, a smart tool used to fight cyber hazards.
Child Safe Program
The ChildSafe Program, according to the Centralia Sentinel, can be loaded onto a child’s computer or cell phone to monitor and filter information coming through social media sites or their incoming and outgoing calls and text messages.
Fill In The Blanks – Sex, Drugs and _ _ _
Let’s play a game…you fill in the blanks…Sex, Drugs and _ _ _. I bet you thought that was easy. Did you say, “sex, drugs and rock and roll?” If you did you are wrong. The correct answer is…Sex, Drugs and Hyper Texting Teens.
If you thought that the worse thing that would happen if your kid was texting over 120 times a day was that you’d have a big cellular bill you were wrong about that, too.
The Associated Press reports that a new study shows that teens who text 120 times a day or more are more likely to have had sex or used alcohol and drugs than kids who don’t send as many messages.
Hey, Mom…Can I Have A Few Friends Over?
The next time one of your kids asks you that question you better think it over before saying, yes. As Bob Dylan has pointed out, “the times they are a changing” and Facebook is leading the way.
Rebecca Javeleau, 14, of Herdfordshire, England learned the lesson the hard way when she innocently posted an invitation to her birthday on her Facebook page. She was shocked when she received 21,000 RSVP’s to the event (man they are going to need a lot of cake for that many people)! It seems that when Rebecca created her “Event” that she forgot to mark it a private affair.
Los Angeles Unified School District builds pricey new school
I keep hearing about all of the teachers that are losing their jobs because there is not enough money to employ them. I keep hearing that there is not enough money being given to educational institutions so that they can properly run tutoring programs or offer additional courses for advanced students. I hear of schools being shut down and districts consolidating buildings to try to save some money.
New School, No Funds
Prepaid Credit Cards… Good For Kids… Not So Good For Parents1
I’d like to thank the Kardashian sisters (wow…never thought that would happen) for giving prepaid credit cards the bad publicity that I think they deserve. The Kardashian Kard (a re-loadable prepaid debit card that was targeted at teenage fans of the sisters) was launched on November 9, but was quickly pulled off of the market because of bad press associated with its high fees - $99.95 for 12 months…ouch!
